Control payment methods around your product catalog
Payment Methods by Product & Country for WooCommerce Pro helps stores control which payment gateways appear at checkout according to what customers are buying and where they are located. Payment gateways differ in fees, regional popularity, adaptability, and other considerations. By applying rules to products and customers’ countries, a store can present payment options that better match its catalog and operating needs.
Rules for products, categories, and tags
The plugin can control gateway availability at the product level and at the variation level. This gives stores a more detailed way to manage payment methods for individual items or specific variations. For example, a high-end variation can be limited to credit card transactions while a standard version remains available through multiple payment methods.
Pro also works with product categories and tags. A store can show selected gateways for products in a category or hide selected gateways when products from a category or tag are in the cart. These approaches can be used to leave one category unrestricted, exclude PayPal for another, or make a product group available through wire transfer while other gateways are hidden.
This type of control is useful when products have different margins, prices, regional requirements, or payment preferences. A store selling expensive products may want to prevent PayPal from appearing and instead offer wire transfer or a local gateway. Lower-priced products may also need different gateway choices when payment fees have a greater effect on margins.
Fallback payment selection
Mixed carts can create conflicts when different products have incompatible gateway rules. In some combinations, the applied restrictions could leave no payment method available. The Pro version lets administrators designate a fallback payment gateway for these cases, helping provide an available payment option when a cart contains products governed by different rules.
Country-based gateway restrictions
Payment gateway visibility can also be restricted by country. This adds a geographic condition to the product, category, tag, and variation controls, allowing stores to manage which payment methods are available to customers in particular countries.
Practical configuration examples
- Category-based control: leave one category untouched, exclude PayPal for another, and restrict a third category to wire transfer by excluding other gateways.
- Product-level control: apply a payment rule to one product or variation when category-wide settings are not precise enough.
- Mixed-cart handling: assign a fallback gateway for carts where several product rules conflict.
- Country-aware checkout: restrict gateway availability according to the customer’s country.
Installation and setup
After adding the Pro plugin to the WooCommerce store, define the payment gateways that should be shown or hidden for relevant products, variations, categories, tags, and countries. Review combinations that may conflict and select a fallback gateway where needed. The resulting checkout rules can be adjusted as the catalog and payment requirements change.
