Keep WordPress content changing
Random Content Pro is a standalone WordPress plugin for displaying changing content across your site. Create content entries, organize them into groups, and show a random selection wherever you need it. Each page load can present a different item, helping you keep testimonials, promotional messages, calls to action, tips, quotes, or frequently asked questions varied without repeatedly editing page content.
The plugin is designed for practical use without coding. Content can be created through the Random Content post type using the WordPress editor, with support for text, images, HTML, shortcodes, and embeds. Groups work like categories, allowing you to maintain separate rotation sets for different parts of your site.
Control what visitors see
Random Content Pro adds controls for deciding when content appears and which visitors can see it. Set start and end dates for individual items to run time-limited campaigns or remove scheduled content automatically. Visitor targeting can use user role, login status, UTM parameters, referrer, or page type.
- Scheduling: Set start and end dates for content items.
- Visitor targeting: Show different content according to visitor and request details.
- Frequency controls: Prevent the same item from appearing twice in a row and set cooldown periods between displays.
- Weighted selection: Assign each item a weight from 1 to 10 so higher-weight items appear more often.
- Display rules: Restrict group visibility to logged-in visitors, specific roles, or specific page types.
- Fallback content: Choose what appears when filtering removes every available item.
Shortcodes and widgets
Place random content with the [random_content] shortcode in posts, pages, sidebars, and widget areas. Use a group ID to draw from a specific set, add a number of posts to display multiple items, or use the AJAX option when full-page caching would otherwise keep the same selection visible.
For example, a group shortcode can select content from a particular rotation set, while the num_posts parameter can display several items at once. The ajax=”yes” option loads content after the page loads, which is useful for sites using page caching or a CDN.
You can also use the Random Content widget. Add it under Appearance → Widgets, select a group, and set the number of posts. Leaving the group empty allows the widget to draw from all entries.
Suitable workflows
Use separate groups for testimonials, header promotions, sidebar banners, campaign messages, educational tips, or support content. Weighted selection can help vary test messages, while scheduling and targeting let you align content with campaigns or visitor contexts. Built-in caching and efficient PHP randomization support the plugin’s lightweight approach.
