Manage WordPress Password Policies
Password Policy Manager helps administrators create and enforce stronger password practices across a WordPress site. The Enterprise and Premium editions extend the core password management workflow with controls for password strength, expiry, resets, first-login requirements, inactive sessions, and multisite installations.
These paid editions are suited to sites that need more structured control than a single password rule applied to everyone. Administrators can define requirements for passwords, review password strength, and prompt users to update credentials when necessary.
Core Password Security Controls
The plugin supports password rules that can include minimum and maximum password length and other administrator-defined constraints. A password strength meter and password score help show whether users’ passwords are strong, medium, or weak.
- Password expiry: Set a custom time period after which users must create a new password.
- Password changes: Require users to change their password at the next login.
- One-click reset: Invalidate current passwords and require users to generate new passwords.
- Password management: Review user password strength and related password information from the administration workflow.
When a reset is used for users, current sessions are killed and users are required to set a new strong password through email. This provides a direct response when credentials need to be replaced.
Enterprise Plan Capabilities
The Enterprise plan adds controls for broader WordPress setups. Administrators can enforce strong passwords on first login for specific user roles, helping apply a defined password standard when those users first access the site.
- Role-based first-login enforcement: Require selected roles to create strong passwords.
- Inactive-user logout: Log out users and destroy their sessions after a customizable period of inactivity.
- Multisite support: Create password policies for an entire WordPress multisite network.
Premium Plan Capabilities
The Premium plan provides role-based and user-based password policies. This allows administrators to apply different requirements to selected roles or individual users instead of relying on one policy for every account.
- Require selected users to create strong passwords on their first login.
- Require specific roles to change passwords at their next login.
- Use role-based one-click password reset and logout controls.
- Support custom login forms, including WooCommerce, Elementor, and Ultimate Member.
Premium also includes the Enterprise capabilities described for inactive-user logout and multisite policy management.
Practical Workflow
Begin by setting password length and strength constraints. Review password scores to identify weak credentials, then enforce a password change or use a one-click reset when required. For sites with different account groups, assign policies by role or user. On a multisite installation, configure the policy for the network rather than managing each site separately.
Installation
Install Password Policy Manager in WordPress, activate the paid edition, and configure its password rules and enforcement settings. If you use a supported custom login form, configure the relevant policy for that login experience. Test first-login, expiry, reset, and inactivity settings with suitable accounts before applying them broadly.
