Clean up your WordPress media library
Media Cleaner Pro is designed to help WordPress site owners identify and remove unused media entries, unnecessary files, and broken media references. It builds on Media Cleaner’s smart analysis to examine how media is used across a site, helping you review clutter before taking action.
The plugin is suitable for sites with different media types, including retina and WebP versions. It has also been tested with Gutenberg, a range of themes, and WooCommerce. For websites that use more complex systems to manage content, the Pro edition adds capabilities intended to improve compatibility and give you more ways to inspect media usage.
Review changes before permanent deletion
Media Cleaner includes an internal trash feature, allowing reported items to be reviewed before they are permanently deleted. This gives you a practical workflow for checking scan results, identifying false positives, and confirming which entries or files should be removed.
Deleted files remain in the trash until permanent deletion is explicitly confirmed. This review-based approach is useful when managing a large library or when media is referenced through several site components. A backup plan should be in place before carrying out cleanup operations.
Pro analysis tools
- Filesystem Analysis: Scans the physical /uploads directory and matches files against the WordPress Media Library.
- Live Site Scan: Analyzes the online version of your website and may improve accuracy in some cases.
- WP-CLI support: Lets you run the plugin at a higher speed or automate scans through direct server access using SSH.
Filesystem Analysis is useful when the uploads directory contains files that are no longer represented correctly in the Media Library. Live Site Scan provides another view of the published site, while WP-CLI support can suit administrators who prefer command-line workflows or direct server access.
Compatibility for complex WordPress sites
Media Cleaner Pro adds extra support for complex plugins and builders, including ACF, Metabox, Divi Builder, Fusion Builder for Avada, WPBakery Page Builder, Visual Composer, Elementor, Beaver Builder, Brizy Builder, Oxygen Builder, Slider Revolution, Justified Image Grid, and Avia Framework. The source also notes support for many more plugins.
This compatibility is useful for websites where media can be placed inside custom fields, builder layouts, sliders, or other content structures. Smart analysis helps the plugin work with specific plugins and themes, while the scan information can indicate which builders and plugins are supported, which are not, and what the scan cannot see.
Optional AI assistant workflow
Media Cleaner can be driven by an AI assistant through the MCP server of AI Engine. After MCP is enabled in the Media Cleaner settings, an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT can run a scan, read results, explain why media was reported, ignore false positives, and help clean up. The tools provide information about compatibility and scan visibility, and permanent deletion still requires explicit confirmation.
Installation and first scan
Install Media Cleaner Pro in your WordPress site, open its settings, and configure the available scan options. Run a scan, review the reported media and files, and move appropriate items to the internal trash. Check the results carefully before confirming any permanent deletion. Sites using advanced builders or content plugins can use the Pro analysis features to examine additional areas of the installation.
