Advanced image optimization through Kraken.io
Web Interface PRO is the paid version of Kraken.io’s web-based image optimization interface. It adds resizing and sync-to-Dropbox capabilities to the Kraken.io toolkit, giving users additional ways to prepare and manage optimized media.
Kraken.io is designed to compress images in the cloud and convert them into formats such as WebP and AVIF. The service can also work with JPEG, PNG, GIF, HEIC/HEIF, and PDF files. This makes the toolkit suitable for websites, image libraries, documents, and stores where large media files need to be processed before delivery or further use.
Compression and format conversion
The optimization engine supports both intelligent lossy and lossless processing. Lossy optimization is intended to reduce file size while keeping images visually close to the original, while lossless processing is available when preserving the source data is the priority.
Power users can control JPEG quality and chroma subsampling on a per-image basis. Files can be converted between supported formats, including WebP, AVIF, JPEG, PNG, and GIF. These options allow an image workflow to use next-generation formats or remain with more traditional file types, depending on the project.
Resizing and Dropbox synchronization
The PRO interface adds resizing tools for images that need to be reduced to a suitable maximum width or height. Resizing can help prepare oversized uploads for practical website use, while the service enhances resized images to help maintain sharpness and reduce visible haloing.
Web Interface PRO also includes sync-to-Dropbox functionality. This provides an additional way to work with optimized files and move them into a Dropbox-based workflow.
WordPress media workflows
The connected WordPress plugin can optimize newly uploaded images and the thumbnail sizes generated by WordPress. Existing media can be processed from a dedicated Bulk Optimize screen or through the Media Library bulk action, with live progress shown during the operation.
A Kraken.io summary panel in the Media Library, Add Media, and Plugins screens, together with a Dashboard widget, provides information about connection status, plan, quota usage, active settings, and supported formats. Per-image savings and error badges are available in the Media grid and list views.
The plugin is designed to work with multisite installations, page builders, CDNs, and local or development sites. It can detect other image optimizer plugins and offer one-click deactivation to avoid competing optimization processes.
Installation and connection
Install the Kraken.io WordPress plugin, create or use a Kraken.io account, and connect the site with the API key and secret. The service offers a free account with testing quota, while paid plans are available as usage grows. After connection, configure the desired optimization, conversion, and resizing settings, then process new uploads or use the bulk tools for existing media.
API credentials are stored write-only and masked in the plugin settings. Optimization takes place server-to-server with Kraken.io, and the plugin content-verifies uploads before processing.
