Tailor WordPress access by role
PublishPress Capabilities Pro is a WordPress user role and permissions tool for sites that need more control than the default role settings provide. It lets you edit existing roles, create or duplicate roles, and assign the capabilities each role needs without writing code. Administrators, Editors, Authors, Contributors, Subscribers, and custom roles can each receive a tailored set of permissions.
The plugin helps you manage permissions for publishing, reading, editing, and deleting content. You can work with posts, pages, custom post types, categories, tags, and other site capabilities from the Capabilities screen. Support also includes permissions for WooCommerce products, orders, and coupons.
Pro controls for the WordPress admin
PublishPress Capabilities Pro adds more precise control over the WordPress administration area. The Admin Menus screen lets you edit menu links and block top-level or sub-menu links for selected roles. This is useful when a team member needs access to part of WordPress but should not see unrelated tools or store management screens.
You can also hide metaboxes for specific roles and block admin pages by URL. These controls complement the broader options available for removing toolbar items, dashboard widgets, and Profile screen features. Editor Features can limit what users see while writing in the block editor or Classic Editor, including sidebar panels, the Publish button, the title, body, or permalink.
Practical permission workflows
- Content teams: Give authors and editors only the publishing and editing capabilities required for their responsibilities.
- Custom content: Assign distinct capabilities to custom post types and their taxonomies, whether they come from code, a theme, or a plugin.
- WooCommerce stores: Control access to WooCommerce admin links, products, orders, coupons, and related screens for selected roles.
- Multisite networks: Manage permissions on one site or choose to synchronize permission changes across the network.
- Role testing: Safely test a user’s account without resetting the user’s password.
Keep permission changes manageable
Every permissions change is backed up automatically, giving you a way to restore earlier settings if a change produces an unwanted result. This is particularly useful while testing new roles, adjusting access for a plugin, or reviewing permissions after adding new site functionality.
Additional tools include redirects for login, logout, and registration, frontend controls that can hide elements or add CSS by role, navigation menu restrictions based on role or logged-in status, admin styling by role, and organization for admin notices.
Installation and first setup
Install and activate PublishPress Capabilities Pro in your WordPress site. Open the Capabilities area, select the role you want to manage, and review its available settings. Create, copy, or edit a role, then assign the required capabilities and administration controls. For menu access, use the Admin Menus screen to mark links that the selected role should not access. Review the resulting permissions with the available backup and user-testing tools before applying the same approach across a multisite network.
