Cloudflare tools for WordPress
Cloudflare Pro and Cloudflare Business provide paid-plan capabilities for improving WordPress performance and protecting sites. The Cloudflare plugin connects WordPress with Cloudflare services, allowing selected settings and information to be managed from within the WordPress plugin instead of requiring every task to be completed in the Cloudflare dashboard.
Automatic Platform Optimization
Automatic Platform Optimization, or APO, lets Cloudflare serve an entire WordPress site from its edge network. The source describes an edge network with more than 250 data centers worldwide and states that APO can speed up a WordPress site by up to 300%.
APO differs from traditional caching approaches by caching static HTML pages at Cloudflare’s edge, rather than focusing only on static assets such as images, JavaScript, and CSS. When content is updated, APO automatically purges the updated content from cache so visitors can receive current pages while unchanged pages continue to benefit from edge delivery.
APO is included for paid plan users, including Pro and Business. The same service is described as a $5 add-on for the free plan and includes an unlimited amount of subdomains.
WordPress-focused security
Cloudflare’s Web Application Firewall is available on paid plans and includes rulesets tailored to WordPress threats and vulnerabilities. These security rules are regularly updated, and the WAF can be enabled without difficult adjustments to the site.
Cloudflare also provides free DDoS mitigation, free DNS, and free automated SSL certificates as additional Cloudflare benefits described with APO. The plugin includes a header rewrite intended to prevent a redirect loop when Cloudflare Universal SSL is enabled.
Controls and analytics in WordPress
From the plugin, you can change settings for cache purge, security level, Always Online, and image optimization. This gives site administrators a central WordPress workflow for commonly used Cloudflare controls.
Analytics in the plugin can show total visitors, bandwidth saved, and threats blocked. Support for HTTP2 and Server Push is also included among the plugin’s additional features.
Practical use cases
Cloudflare Pro or Business can suit WordPress sites that need edge delivery for HTML, automated cache handling after content updates, and a WordPress-oriented firewall configuration. APO is useful when the goal is to combine CDN delivery, intelligent caching, and other WordPress optimizations through Cloudflare rather than relying only on traditional page-caching methods.
Installation and connection
Install and activate the Cloudflare plugin in WordPress. On first use, the plugin asks for a Cloudflare account connection, including the email address used to sign up at cloudflare.com and an API credential. After connecting the site, configure the available Cloudflare settings and enable the paid-plan features appropriate to your account.
