Google Workspace login for WordPress
Login for Google Apps Premium and Login for Google Apps Enterprise extend Login for Google Apps for organizations that want WordPress access to follow their Google Workspace accounts. Users can authenticate through Google using secure OAuth2 authentication, rather than entering a separate WordPress username and password. If two-factor authentication is enabled for the Google Workspace account, it can also be used during authentication.
The paid editions are designed for WordPress websites, multisite installations, private intranets, and organization websites where account administration should be connected to a Google Workspace domain. They reduce the need for Google Workspace domain administrators to manage separate WordPress user accounts.
Premium edition
The Premium edition allows everyone in your Google Workspace domain to log in to WordPress. When an eligible user does not already have a WordPress account, the plugin can create one automatically. This provides a practical workflow for organizations whose employees or members already have accounts in Google Workspace.
Instead of manually creating each WordPress account, administrators can allow users to authenticate with Google and let the plugin handle account creation in WordPress. Users who are already logged in to Gmail can proceed through the WordPress login screen without explicitly entering a separate WordPress password.
Enterprise edition
Enterprise includes the Premium login and account-creation workflow and adds more detailed access management. Administrators can specify access and WordPress role controls based on Google Group membership or Organizational Unit membership.
Enterprise also provides logs of accounts created and roles changed by the plugin. These records can help administrators review how WordPress accounts were created and how role assignments were updated through the Google Workspace connection.
Centralized Google functionality
Login for Google Apps provides a platform for centralizing Google functionality on a WordPress site. Extensions can share the authentication and permissions already granted through Login for Google Apps, so additional extensions do not need to configure authentication independently.
- Google Drive Embedder: lets users browse for Google Drive documents and embed them directly in posts or pages.
- Google Apps Directory: lets logged-in users search a Google Apps employee directory from a widget on an intranet or client site.
- Google Profile Avatars: displays users’ Google profile photos in place of their avatars throughout the site.
Setup and practical use
Setup requires administrator access to a Google Workspace domain or a regular Gmail account. During configuration, you register with Google and obtain two codes for the plugin. OAuth2 is used instead of the older SAML protocol, providing a simpler configuration approach described by the product information.
Premium suits organizations that want domain users to sign in without maintaining duplicate WordPress accounts manually. Enterprise is suited to sites where access and WordPress roles need to reflect Google Groups or Organizational Units, with account and role activity available for review.
Installation
Install Login for Google Apps on the WordPress website, multisite network, or private intranet where Google-based login is required. Complete the Google registration process, enter the two obtained codes, and configure the applicable paid edition. For Enterprise, define the required Group or Organizational Unit access and role controls. Extensions can then use the shared authentication platform.
