Move Joomla content into WordPress
FG Joomla to WordPress Premium is a migration plugin for transferring Joomla website content to WordPress. It can migrate sections as WordPress categories, categories as sub-categories, and Joomla posts as WordPress content. Published, unpublished, and archived posts are supported, and Joomla articles can be imported as posts or pages.
The migration process can also include web links, tags, page breaks, images, external media, and internal links. It is compatible with multisite installations and has been tested with Joomla versions 1.5 to 6.0 and the latest version of WordPress on large databases.
Premium migration capabilities
Users, menus, and SEO data
The Premium version migrates authors and other users with their passwords, along with the navigation menus. It can transfer Joomla meta descriptions and meta keywords, keeping important SEO information with the imported content. Joomla article IDs can be preserved, or Joomla URLs can be redirected to the new WordPress URLs.
Media and content details
Images and other post media can be uploaded to the WordPress uploads directories as an option. External media can also be uploaded as an option. The plugin can modify post content to maintain media links, resize images according to the sizes defined in WordPress, and use the first post image as the featured image. Image alt attributes and captions are kept, and internal links are modified during the migration.
Legacy platforms and Joomla features
Premium supports Joomla 1.0 and Mambo 4.5 and 4.6, including processing for {mosimages} and {mospagebreak}. It can migrate Joomla 1.0 static articles as pages, Joomla 2.5 and later featured images and post links, Joomla 3.1 and later tags, and Joomla 3.7 and later custom fields. Mambo data and Elxis data, an early Joomla fork, are also supported.
Automation and add-ons
The Premium version can run imports automatically from cron. It also allows add-ons that extend migration coverage for additional Joomla components and content types. Available add-ons include K2, EasyBlog, Flexicontent, Zoo, Kunena, JComments, JDownloads, JEvents, Docman, Virtuemart, JReviews, Mosets Tree, Community Builder, RSBlog, AllVideos, HikaShop, Acymailing, and others listed for the plugin.
Additional options include migration support for WP-PostViews, translation transfer from Joom!Fish to WPML, and extensions such as RokGallery, JoomGallery, PhocaGallery, PhocaDownload, Attachments, Simple Image Gallery, RSGallery, and Contact Manager.
Practical migration workflow
Use the plugin when moving a Joomla publication, store, community site, or legacy Mambo or Elxis installation to WordPress. First identify the content types and extensions that need to be transferred. Then select the relevant Premium options, decide whether to preserve article IDs or redirect URLs, and choose how media should be handled. Add-ons can be used when the source site relies on supported Joomla extensions.
Installation and database connection
Install the plugin in WordPress and enter the Joomla database connection parameters. If Joomla and WordPress are on different hosts, the WordPress server must be able to access the Joomla database. One documented approach is to allow a remote MySQL connection from the WordPress host; another is to copy the Joomla database to the WordPress database environment. After the connection is available, configure the migration choices and run the import manually or through cron.
