Change WordPress Text Without Editing Code
Say What Pro is designed for changing translatable strings from WordPress core, themes, and plugins without modifying source files. Enter the existing string and the replacement text, then let the plugin apply the change across the site.
This is useful when a plugin or theme uses wording that does not fit your site, audience, or workflow. You can adjust marked-for-translation text while leaving the underlying code untouched. The plugin can only change strings that are marked for translation.
Find Strings More Easily
The Pro edition includes String Discovery mode, helping you search for strings on your site through autocomplete suggestions. This reduces the need to guess the exact wording or inspect plugin source code to locate a translatable string.
String Discovery works with both server-side and JavaScript-rendered strings. That makes it suitable for sites where text may be generated in the browser as well as text delivered by the server.
Flexible Replacement Options
- Wildcard replacements: Replace individual words or fragments across the whole site.
- Text-domain-specific filters: Improve performance by applying filters for specific text domains.
- Multilingual replacements: Set different replacements for different languages on multilingual sites.
- Import and export: Move replacements through the user interface.
These tools support both focused and broader text changes. You can replace a specific marked string, target a fragment, or maintain separate wording for different languages.
Practical Uses
Use Say What Pro to adapt labels, notices, buttons, and other translatable text supplied by WordPress core, a theme, or a plugin. It can help tailor terminology for a particular business, clarify wording for visitors, or align interface text with a multilingual site’s language requirements.
Because replacements are entered rather than hard-coded into plugin or theme files, the workflow avoids editing code when making supported text changes. The discovery tools are especially useful when you know what visitors see but do not know where the original string is defined.
Import and Export Workflow
Pro provides import and export features through the user interface. The wider Say What? plugin also has preliminary support for importing and exporting replacements through WP-CLI, including export, import, list, and update commands. CSV files are used for import and update operations.
Installation and Setup
- Install and activate Say What Pro in WordPress.
- Identify the translatable text you want to change, using String Discovery and autocomplete where helpful.
- Enter the current string and the replacement text.
- For multilingual sites, configure the appropriate replacement for each language.
- Use the import or export tools when you need to manage replacement data through the interface.
After configuration, the plugin applies the replacements to supported translatable strings from WordPress core, themes, and plugins.
