Font Awesome Pro for WordPress
Font Awesome Pro provides a practical way to add Font Awesome icons to WordPress pages, posts, and templates. The plugin supports both Pro and Free icons, letting you work with the latest release or select a specific release when that better suits an existing site. It also connects your WordPress installation with Font Awesome Kits, including custom icons available through Pro Kits.
The plugin is designed for different WordPress editing workflows. In the block editor, you can insert icons as dedicated blocks or place them inline with text. In the classic editor, you can use icon names with shortcodes or basic HTML using standard Font Awesome syntax. This makes the product useful for new page content as well as sites that still rely on older editing methods.
Pro icon access and Kits
To use Pro icons and Kit-powered features, create a Kit on FontAwesome.com and select Pro icons in the Kit settings. The plugin settings accept the API Token from your Font Awesome account. A Kit can provide access to Font Awesome icons, including the latest Duotone styles and custom icons from your Pro Kits.
The plugin can also use the Font Awesome CDN. The source material specifies that the CDN option supports Version 5 icons only. If you use this option, your site domain needs to be added to the allowed domains on the Font Awesome CDN settings page before adding icons with shortcodes or HTML.
Adding icons in WordPress
Block editor
After setup, select the Font Awesome Icon block and use the Choose Icon button to open the Icon Chooser. For inline icons, select the Font Awesome option in the format toolbar. Inline icons require at least WordPress 6.3. The Icon Chooser lets you search by icon name, category, or keyword, then change the family and style before selecting an icon.
Classic editor
In the classic editor, add an icon to a text area with a shortcode containing the icon name and, when needed, a style prefix. The fa- part of the icon name is not required. Without a style prefix, the shortcode uses the Classic Solid style. Basic HTML with standard Font Awesome syntax is also supported.
Compatibility and troubleshooting
Font Awesome Pro includes automatic compatibility for Font Awesome Version 4 syntax. This is useful when your site or its plugins still use Version 4 conventions. The plugin also helps troubleshoot situations where several Font Awesome versions load through other plugins or themes, which can lead to unexpected icon display or technical issues.
Installation
Install and enable the Font Awesome plugin in WordPress. Open its settings and choose the icon source you want to use, such as a Pro Kit or the Font Awesome CDN. For a Pro Kit, add the API Token from your Font Awesome account. Once the source is configured, add icons through the block editor, classic-editor shortcodes, or HTML.
